Comparative Study on Hybrid Excitation Flux Switching Motors without and with Variably Magnetizable Permanent Magnets for Electrified Vehicle Propulsion

A demand for high efficiency traction motors has been accelerated by the promotion of electrified vehicles, such as battery and fuel cell electric vehicles. As a part development motor, this paper reports comparative study on two kinds hybrid excitation flux switching (HEFSM) variable machine. One is conventional HEFSM, which consists stator with constantly magnetized-permanent magnets, field coils (FECs) three-phase armature windings, rotor salient poles like switched reluctance motor. The other HEFSM employing variably magnetizable-permanent magnets (VM-PMs) that replace in FEC slot area one. Based magnetization nature VM-PMs, latter promises replacement magnetomotive force (mmf) FECs VM-PMs makes motor better at both low- high-speed under low-torque condition, is, urban driving or highway cruising. To verify that, finite element analysis- (FEA)-based design simulations, well experimental performance evaluations were conducted reasonable dimensional electrical constraints. result, it shown can achieve higher region while keeping low-speed region.
